Nuclera’s cutting-edge technology reinvents the preparation of protein samples for research and industry. We were tasked with showcasing the molecular processes that are happening on the microfluidic cartridges of the Nuclera Bioprinter device. This included showing coupled transcription and translation processes working in tandem on the cartridge. Making sure that visual cohesion as well as narrative design is maintained throughout was paramount for the project.

 

We went for an incredibly challenging approach of mixing videography of the Bioprinter device with the animation showing its inner workings.  Animating complex processes such as protein folding is always tricky. Instead of a very scientific molecular dynamics-like simulation of every amino acid within the protein, we decided to implement a more clear coarse-grained model but retaining the look and feel of the protein being folded.

 

The animation was used for Nuclera’s successful Series B fundraise and won the 2022 AVA International Digital Award for animation.
